May
This has been a good month so far.I am glad to report that I had a wonderful time at the 2005 Augusta Military Academy reunion[April28-May1,I had a 4 day pass/leave].It was really special to see former cadets I had not seen in 30 years. It was also great to meet former cadets from other classes too.Driving to VA went very smooth[c.600mi].I started at 0430.It was a about 1900hrs when I came to the Holiday Inn and Conf.Center off I81 near Staunton. The Shenandoah Valley was beautiful driving thru. That nite I decided to get a motel room[rather then sleep in my car].With military discount it was only 50.00$ at the Days Inn right across from the Holiday Inn.The next day after a good rest I got up early[0530]and after a good free breakfast w/ good hot coffee I drove into Staunton to re-live some memories I had in this historic city[birth-place of Woodrow Wilson].It was over-cast and drizzly but otherwise fine as I jogged and walked around the center of town.I remembered the girl's school Stuart Hall and the former Staunton Military Academy[last year '75].I arrived back at the Holiday Inn just in time to catch the chartered bus for the trip to Appomatox where Gen.Robt E.Lee surrendered the Army of No.Virginia to Gen.U.S.Grant of US Army effectively ending the Civil War 140 years ago in April 1865.The Nat'l Park site was well maintained and very moving to see these bldgs from that period and the McLean House where the surrender took place. It was a real nice day trip and the luncheon at the historic Babcock House near-by was fine. That evening there was more socializing.I began to see and meet more people I knew.Larry and Debbie Nicholson arrived from So.Carolina.Larry was my former Company Commander of A Company at AMA.The last month he took over as Cadet Battalion Commander.Larry is now a USMC Col.A fine military record.
